Elon Musk hires Twitter’s next CEO; former Meta COO a potential candidate
Elon Musk said on May 10 that he has selected a new CEO to lead Twitter.
Next CEO will start in just weeks
Musk wrote in a tweet:
“Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter. She will be starting in ~6 weeks!”
Musk said that he will remain involved with the company as executive chairman and CTO; he will oversee product, software, and sysops.
Musk’s tweet indicates that the new CEO is a woman, in line with earlier speculation that the most likely candidate is former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg. However, Musk and Twitter have not yet confirmed the identity of the new CEO.
Musk took on the role of CEO in October 2022, when he acquired Twitter following months of negotiation and apparent cancellations of the deal.
Musk’s Twitter is less crypto-focused
Musk’s buyout of Twitter was expected to integrate crypto and blockchain features — including Dogecoin payments — into the social media platform.
However, crypto efforts appear to have been reduced under his leadership. Of late, Twitter has only partnered with stock and crypto trading platform eToro in April. The site also briefly changed its logo to the Dogecoin icon in April.
Most of Twitter’s existing main crypto features, such as crypto tipping and NFT profile pics, were introduced under Tess Rinearson. Rinearson headed Twitter’s crypto division until November 2022 and started during Jack Dorsey’s tenure as CEO in 2021.
Elon Musk’s continued involvement with Twitter means that the company’s crypto direction will not necessarily change even with the introduction of a new CEO.
