A self-proclaimed Bitcoin creator has been required to pay £400,000 (approx $516,000) as a security deposit for legal costs if he intends to pursue his claims against crypto exchanges Coinbase and Kraken.

Wright’s Financial Statements—Crypto Magnate or Imposter?

Notably, the judge, James Mellor, sitting in the England and Wales High Court, raised concerns about Wright’s financial capability to cover legal expenses, citing discrepancies in his past statements regarding his financial position. Mellor made it clear that if Wright fails to provide the necessary security deposit promptly, the court will dismiss his claims within a few weeks.

On the other hand, the individual in question not only identifies as Nakamoto but also lays claim to the fundamental concepts underpinning Bitcoin. In 2022, Wright filed a similar lawsuit against Coinbase and Kraken, accusing them of copyright infringement. He asserts that both exchanges, particularly Kraken’s operator, Payward, violated his intellectual property rights by using the term ‘Bitcoin’.

What’s wrong with Wright’s finances?

Adding to the skepticism surrounding Wright’s financial standing, Mellor referred to statements made by the individual himself, boasting of being financially “untouchable” by utilizing a trust to transfer assets. Despite this claim, doubts persist regarding Wright’s true financial capability to handle the legal costs. The judge also questioned whether Wright and his investment firm had enough cash on hand to bear the cost of the legal case.

However, the situation is further complicated as the judge also noted conflicting testimony related to Wright’s financial situation in connected U.S. court proceedings involving his previous business partner, Ira Kleiman. This raised eyebrows and fueled further doubts about Wright’s claims.

What does Kraken say?

In response to Wright’s Claims, Kraken, one of the accused exchanges, defended itself. The exchange stated that Satoshi never intended for a single person to control Bitcoin, which is why he released the Bitcoin software under open-source licenses for the world’s benefit. Kraken sees the court ruling as a significant victory in their defense against Wright’s claims of controlling Bitcoin.
