Amazon announced on Monday about its plan to invest billions in an Artificial Intelligence firm – Anthropic. This investment is a strategic move to keep up with its competitors – Microsoft and Google.

Shifting Focus on AI

Anthropic, a young company born just a few years back, made headlines when it released Claude 2 – a new AI chatbot. This new AI chatbot had strong coding and mathematics skills and a large context window able to explain its thinking.

Amazon is attempting to capitalize on the excitement and promise of so-called generative AI, which includes technologies such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude chatbots.

Amazon promised to invest $1.25 billion in Anthropic initially and is planning to invest up to $4 billion in the future. This initial investment is bound to secure Amazon a minority stake in the company. Also, this announcement proves its firm commitment to the AI firm.

Competition with Rivals

Amazon hopes to remain at the forefront of AI innovation alongside Microsoft, pouring billions into OpenAI and Google’s influential AI developments. The investment also indicates that microchips other than Nvidia’s GPUs might be feasible for AI applications.

Although it is a great strategy to keep up with competitors, Amazon’s investment deal cannot seem so competitive compared to Microsoft’s deal. Microsoft has reportedly invested on OpenAI a total of $ 13 billion cumulatively since 2019 till date.

However, Microsoft and Google are tech companies focusing on the internet and software. In contrast, Amazon is primarily an e-commerce company. So, looking into this point also creates a strong point for Amazon to be a worthy competitor.

What are the possible benefits of the collaboration

This collaboration is intended to emphasize customer safety research and product development. The investment plans to make Anthropic’s AI technology available to Amazon Web Services (AWS) users, emphasizing safety research and product development.

AWS customers will have first access to model customization and fine-tuning options. It is expected to allow businesses to use AI for jobs ranging from sophisticated communication and creative content development to complicated reasoning and thorough training.

Anthropic now has access to AWS’ sophisticated computational infrastructure, including Trainium and Inferentia chips, which will improve model training and deployment capabilities.
